- How Do Cloth Diapers Work on Outings?
Baby. Cloth diapering is one of the best decisions you can make for your baby. Cotton diapers offer a softer, more natural, and breathable feel without chemicals.
You. Cloth diapers are easier to use than ever before. Leaks and hassles are not a big problem because new styles fit more snugly and don't require pins or special folding techniques.
Environment. Not only is cloth diapering better for your child and easy to do, it is easier on the environment. Instead of adding non-degradable material to our landfills, cloth diapers get used again and again. "Disposable" diapers are not very disposable - they can remain buried in landfills for years without decomposing!
Here are some good reasons:
- We bring the diapers to you. One less thing to do in the market and more budget friendly than disposables
- Don't have the time or energy? (Especially if you have twins!)
- Live in an apartment & don't have a washing machine? Let us do the dirty work.
- Have someone wanting to buy the service for you? (A great shower gift!!)
How do I know the diapers are getting clean
The nose always knows! Our process of cleaning the diapers is much more environmentally friendly than home-laundering because there is less water and detergent used per diaper. We are using products that are as close to natural as possible. There is a very minimal amount of bleach used on few diapers that are badly stained when sun bleaching is not an option. However, because of the entire process, the diapers are thoroughly rinsed so there will not be any chemicals left in the fibers.
Can I use cloth diapers if my child goes to daycare?
Yes, you can. Talk to your daycare provider, show them the cloth diapers you plan to use, and make it as easy as possible. Just tell your daycare provider that instead of folding up a disposable diaper and tossing it in the trash, they can fold up your cloth diaper, put it in a waterproof tote (that you provide) and give it back to you. You can take care of the rest when you get home.
When you sign up, we deliver:
- A week's worth of clean prefold diapers
- A diaper pail
- A pail liner
- 3 Prorap newborn diaper covers*
All to your door! After a week, we pick up the dirties and deliver clean diapers to you! It's that simple.
*Covers are included with Newborn diaper service. For babies over 9 lbs, we recommend buying covers. You can buy Thirsties covers from Ecological Babies at www.ecologicalbabies.com. Babies in the Sun - http://babiesinthesun.com/ also sells covers. Both companies are locally owned. You will need to wash your own covers.
How do you know how many diapers to give me each week?
The first two weeks, we deliver a full load (84 infant prefolds). The third week, we deliver the number of diapers we received the second week. For example:
Week 1: We deliver 84 clean diapers.
Week 2: We deliver 84 clean diapers, and pick up 78 dirties from last week.
Week 3: We deliver 78 clean diapers, and pick up 81 dirties from last week.
Week 4: We deliver 81 clean diapers, and pick up 80 dirties from last week. etc., etc., etc.
What if I forget to leave my dirties out for pickup?
Uh-oh! Just give us a call at 850-321-1906 and we'll get your diapers as soon as possible! Due to the every rising cost of fuel, we will have to charge an additional $5 delivery fee – but never fear - most people don't forget - they are ready for clean diapers!
I need more covers! What do I do?
Purchase some covers online from www.ecologicalbabies.com. or babiesinthesun.com. It's that easy!
I need more/less diapers or I need a different size.
It's best to keep us over-informed on your diapering experience. If your baby is getting a little big-ish for his or her diapers, keep us in the know. We do have two sizes of diapers available:
- Infant: 7-15 lbs.
- Regular: 15-30 lbs.
You should also keep in mind you will need to change your diaper wrap or nylon pant size on a regular basis as your child grows. You will experience fewer leaks and a happier baby when you have the proper sizes!
For overnight protection, many companies sell organic cotton "diaper doublers," a thick piece of cloth you can tuck inside a cloth diaper for extra absorbency.
If you need to change size or need to adjust your diaper count, just give us a call at 850-321-1906 or email us at wendi@doodlebugdiaper.com
How Do Cloth Diapers Work on Outings?
Cloth diapers work essentially the same way disposable diapers do on outings - in fact, it isn't a far stretch to consider taking cloth diapers on vacations.
With disposables, you throw the dirty diapers into the trash; and subsequently, landfills. With cloth diapers, you must bring the wet or dirty diapers home. The best way to do this is to bring two waterproof bags with you inside your diaper bag. In one small bag keep a stash of clean diapers. The other bag should be empty and can store all dirty diapers until you get home.
So take the first step and ditch disposables for your outings around town. Then, when you feel more confident using cloth diapers outside of your home, consider taking your cloth diapers on your vacation the next time you head out of town! Your baby's skin and your budget will thank you.
ALWAYS AVOID DIAPER CREAMS WITH COD LIVER OIL or any other fish oils. DO NOT use Desitin or A&D. Other brands may be acceptable.
